Remember + Celebrate!

The Sunday morning gatherings when we step into “Remember and Celebrate” as an entire church community are incredibly special to me. I have found myself more exposed to an emotional response to God’s presence… in ways that I can’t, and wouldn’t want, to control. I will probably, most definitely, be crying at some point. This last Remember and Celebrate Sunday, I was a goner early on in the service. Our opening time of worship was spent mingling, grabbing a donut (just one? Come on, they were Krispy Kremes!), coffee…and that was about it. Until I went to sit down and saw that there was a balloon waiting on every seat. Our opportunity then was to write on our own balloon what we were thankful for. And then blow it up and let the room be filled. Not only did I tear up as I wrote my own gratitude out, but…Continue Reading →

With Jesus Stories | Talking to Strangers

With Jesus Stories | Talking to Strangers

God and I have spent some quiet moments together as we embark on the ‘with Jesus’ journey… I am grateful to learn that sometimes, the most spiritual thing I can do is stop, breath, stretch, and listen. This is precisely what I was doing on my ‘day off’ (as a new mom, quiet alone time is hard to come by) at the Day Spa <<harps & trumpets>>. And if you can’t relax at the day-spa, then where can you, eh? So there I was quietly enjoying my breathing, stretching, spa time. Quietly to myself in the Silent Whirlpool (there’s even a sign that says to be quiet posted). Inevitably a woman enters the spa and begins to chat loudly to me. Gah! No! Shhhhhhhh, do you know how precious silence is for me? As she spoke- she shared a lot with me (who knows why) and she mentioned a surgery coming…Continue Reading →

Welcome Weekend | Covenant Conversations

Welcome Weekend | Covenant Conversations

If you have been around ROCKHARBOR the past month, you’ve heard a lot about our Covenant. If you missed something, or simply want more info & resources, this blog post is for You!   WHAT is the covenant? First- if you haven’t heard the messages on Vision, the Covenant, and our Markers [Identity, Family, Mission, Sacrifice] we would encourage you to listen: VISION SERIES 2013 Welcome Weekend + COVENANT 2014 The covenant we are talking about is NOT the covenant of the Old Testament! This is simply our best attempt at corporate discipleship. That is, how do we all encourage, challenge, and hold one another accountable to following Jesus together this year. Our vision is set by Jesus himself – these are some of the things He calls us to when we say ‘yes’ to following Him.   Identity– knowing who God is, who we are, and who we are in Him…Continue Reading →

WORDS of LIFE | Be Watchful

WORDS of LIFE | Be Watchful

For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?  Indeed, you are our glory and joy. –1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 According to Galatians 5:22-23 the fruit of God’s spirit in our life is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.   It is hard to imagine life without any of these gifts, but is especially difficult to comprehend a life where joy, peace and love are absent.  Yet, sometimes because we are human we struggle to accept, or walk in one or all of these gifts. Thankfully, they are God’s promises to us through the Holy Spirit which is God’s deposit in us until He returns.  Therefore, we don’t wait without hope and we don’t hope our own strength. This is good news my friends, because if you are…Continue Reading →

WORDS of LIFE | Lips and Hearts

WORDS of LIFE | Lips and Hearts

This weekend we looked at Luke 14:1-14 and Luke 18: 9-14 to examine how Jesus taught his followers about religiosity and spiritual pride. As Jesus sat down to a dinner at the house of a Pharisee leader, He noticed some of the guests were in competition with one another vying over the seats of honor. Knowing their criteria for judging who should have the highest seat was how well each one followed the Law and Torah, Jesus took the opportunity to speak to them about the upside-down hierarchy in the kingdom of God. He said, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 14:11) Jesus was the very fulfillment of the Law and was physically present in the room, but pride in their own religious efforts and ritual-keeping kept the people from truly seeing Him. How easy is it for us…Continue Reading →

LAZY SUNDAY 2014

Very few would take pride in the label of “lazy.” No, we aim to be efficient and to make use of every second before it slips away. Or, at least, we hope to portray ourselves as well-oiled-machines in human form. This is very tiring, indeed! Fortunately for us, God calls us to a much more abundant life than this hamster wheel approach. He calls us to rest, to play, to eat, to laugh, and dare I even say it…to be lazy. And who is RHMV to disobey? So lazy is what we did. We did it together and we did it well! First, the potluck. Three tables filled with glorious offerings from every cuisine. It’s not often you get to indulge in fried chicken, enchilada casserole, tomato salad (a very small portion of the plate…just to make Mom happy), and freshly spun cotton candy. The indigestion and Pepto Bismol would…Continue Reading →
